Olive production in Morocco is expected to increase by 21% compared to the previous year, said the Minister of Agriculture, Mohamed Sadiki.
The Minister of Agriculture stressed that citrus production is expected to increase by 14% and olive production by 21% compared to the previous campaign, with an increase in the area planted to reach 1,200,000 ha, representing an increase of 4%.
Currently, olive cultivation in Morocco covers about one million hectares, and olive trees, according to data from the Ministry of Agriculture, represent about 65% of the total fruitful trees.
The Minister stated the production of the main fruit trees during this season will be significantly higher than the previous campaign, according to initial forecasts, especially if there will be an improvement in climate conditions.
On the other hand, the Minister noted that the COVID-19 pandemic impacted the world economy, highlighting the role of the farmer and the agricultural sector in the country in terms of the financing of domestic markets and in achieving food security.
The agricultural added value recorded during the previous season a significant growth estimated from 17 to 19% thanks to the good results achieved from different production sectors, including cereals, fruit trees, and animal production, which will help revive the national economy and improve its performance to achieve a growth rate of over 5.5%, the Minister specified.
The total production of cereals reached 103.2 million quintals, representing the second-best production in the history of national agriculture, while the production of fruits and vegetables amounted to significant levels, he added.
