Liberal Prime Minister Justin secured a third term following hotly contested elections in which his party secured enough seats for a minority, according to preliminary results early on Tuesday.
The Liberals are projected to secure 156 seats, far short of the 170 required for the majority Trudeau was seeking, while the conservative opposition party led by Erin O’Toole is set to win about 122 seats.
“Because no matter how you voted … I hear you, I hear you when you say we can only move forward if no one is left behind,” Trudeau said while thanking his supporters.
“You elected a government that will fight for you and deliver for you,” the Prime Minister added.
Trudeau had called for the snap elections last month, in a bid to secure a majority government and pass his agenda without opposition support.
However, after a bumpy five weeks of campaigning, it appears Trudeau is set for a repeat of 2019’s close general election which saw him clinging to power after losing his majority in parliament.
Conservative leader Erin O’Toole conceded defeat on Tuesday, after failing to block the Liberals from securing a third term in power.
In a concession speech, O’Toole recalled Trudeau’s attempt at regaining his majority, stating “tonight Canadians did not give Mr Trudeau the majority mandate he wanted.”
“In fact, Canadians sent him back with another minority at the cost of 600 million dollars (US$470 million) and deeper divisions in our great country,” he added.
