A new study by vaccine makers Modrena suggests that the protection provided by mRNA COVID-19 vaccine wanes by 36% after 12 months.
“This is only one estimate, but we do believe this means as you look toward the fall and winter, at minimum we expect the estimated impact of waning immunity would be 600,000 additional cases of Covid-19,” said Moderna President Stephen Hoge at a conference call with investors reported by Reuters.
Hoge added that some would require hospitalization, yet the number of severe cases was not stated.
In December 2020, the U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) emergently authorized the Moderna vaccine, however, it is currently under review.
To Moderna researchers, immunity starts to decrease after the two recommended jabs. The difference is likely due to Moderna’s higher dose of messenger RNA (mRNA) and the slightly longer interval between the two shots.
“The first six months are great, but you can’t count on that being stable out to a year and beyond,” Hoge explained.
Researches from July to August were able to identify 88 Covid-19 cases among which 19 cases were considered severe, a key benchmark in assessing waning protection.
When speaking Hoge mentioned that he is not worried about Delta as much as he is towards its aftermaths since it is a variant that hasn’t learned yet how to escape the immune system. Moreover, he expects booster shots to be ready by the end of the year to allow them to be tested on a small group of people.
