Here’s a look into the career path of the newly appointed Inspector general of the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces, who rose to the ranks of Morocco’s highest military officials, becoming second to the King only.

A statement from the Ministry of Royal Palaces said “General Belkhir El Farouk was chosen for this position due to his professional qualifications and the spirit of high responsibility that he displayed in the various tasks assigned to him.”

He previously held the position of Commander of the Southern Region, has more than 52 years in the military field, of which 40 years were spent in Morocco’s Southern Region.

Born in Douar Idbouchani in Mirleft in 1950, General Belkhir Farouk joined the ranks of the Moroccan army by entering the Royal Military Academy in Meknes after obtaining his baccalaureate degree in 1968.

After three years of study at the Royal Military Academy in Meknes, Belkhir Farouk graduated with the rank of second lieutenant in 1972, and two years later he obtained the rank of first lieutenant.

Following his graduation, Farouk was assigned several tasks including the leadership of several field military units thanks to the promotions he was receiving.

He holds a diploma in the application of the infantry weapon and of the special teams in France, as well as a diploma in military formations.

He participated in several battles against the Polisario Front until a ceasefire agreement was signed in September 1991 under the supervision of the United Nations.

He also partook in the construction of the Moroccan protective wall, spanning more than 2,700 km, separating the Moroccan areas on the west from the Polisario-controlled areas on the east.

His presence was also important in organizing the African Lion maneuvers, which took place in Agadir from June 7 to 18, 2021 which were highly praised by the United States of America and the participating countries.

In 2006 he was appointed head of the third office in the southern region of Agadir and chief of staff of war. King Mohammed VI appointed him inspector of the infantry force in 2015 a position he held until his appointment as commander of the southern region of the Royal Armed Forces.
