Many people who received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine may need to receive an additional jab, with studies showing the American produced vaccine is a lot less effective against the Delta variant, than initially believed.
A recent study conducted by a team of New York University researchers reported that the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, which only requires one dose, was much less effective in preventing the Delta Variant COVID-19 infection.
Nathaniel Landau, a virologist at New York University’s Grossman School of Medicine said ‘the message we wanted to get across was not that people shouldn’t get this vaccine, but we hope it will be boosted in the future with another dose’.
On August 25, Johnson & Johnson company announced that a second dose of its Covid-19 vaccine generates a strong immune system response.
Johnson & Johnson has confirmed that its vaccine provides strong protection. It said in July that recipients of its vaccine produced strong neutralizing antibodies over at least eight months against all variants, including delta.
‘We have demonstrated that a single dose of our COVID-19 vaccine generates robust immune responses that are robust and sustained over eight months’ Dr. Maathai Mamen, global head of research and development at Johnson & Johnson, said in a statement.
‘We look forward to discussing, with public health officials, a potential strategy for our J&J vaccine for COVID-19, which is increased eight months or more after the primary single-dose vaccination’ he added.
The United States of America has previously donated more than 300,000 doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine to Morocco, contributing to Morocco’s efforts to control the epidemic.
Should Moroccans, therefore, be concerned?
Doctor Tayeb Hamdi, Vice President of the National Federation of Health told Hespress Eng ‘We must always wait for the results of laboratories and studies since the commission still did not verify the authenticity of anything.”
“Moroccans will not receive additional doses at this time,” he said, adding “one dose is enough.”
The High Authority of Health in France recommended that all people who received a dose of the Johnson vaccine, regardless of their age, receive a second dose.
Recently the European Union, the United States and South Africa decided to suspend the use of the COVID-19 vaccine produced by “Johnson & Johnson” after reporting cases of rare blood clots.
The US Food and Drug Administration said that six cases of infection were detected out of more than 6.8 million doses of the vaccine.
Belgium on Wednesday suspended the use of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine against Covid-19 in people under the age of 41, after the death of a woman who received it.
