Idriss Lachgar: I don't influence voters, I am a lawyer

Secretary-General of the Socialist Union of Popular Forces (USFP) Idriss Lachgar said that he expects his party to come in “third or second place” during this election, “maybe even first, but it is the ballot boxes that will decide the final result.”

The leader of the Rose party answered several questions on the final episode of Hespress’ The Road to Elections, one day ahead of Moroccans swarming voting polls to choose their next government.

Lachgar reacted to Abdelillah Benkirane’s comments calling him a daring person, stating “I don’t take into consideration what he says about me because of his contradiction, sometimes he can say the thing and its opposite”.

Regarding the party’s electoral program, the head of the USFP explained that “individual freedoms are indivisible despite the presence of many priorities in the criminal law,” noting that “there are impurities from which the criminal law must be cleaned because it includes a load that conservatives exploit; which requires opening a serious dialogue about it, including the issue of inheritance.”

Lachgar commanded the government, which USFP was part of, stating “the government has succeeded in maintaining strong institutions in our country; It managed social solidarity, managed the process of confronting the coronavirus pandemic, and succeeded in making the health infrastructure capable of resistance, despite its fragility.”

When the government decided on reducing the number of ministers to 20 instead of 39, it was Lachgar’s recommendation, saying “The government made the right decision while taking into consideration my recommendation and applying it.”

Lachgar confirmed that Morocco has challenges with other countries such as Germany and Algeria, noting that it is the result of the country’s unity, which is not appreciated by other countries.

When asked about his party’s slogan “For a new rotation,” Lachgar produced a book with the same title, aiming to give explanations about Morocco’s challenges and giving the example of 2016’s failure, and then the success that was realized in recent years.

Answering the question of Hassan Lachgar’s nomination as a member of his party, the leader of the USFP gave the example of countries like France or England, saying as long as he is a citizen, willing to handle the party’s responsibility, then he has the right to join and face Morocco’s challenges.

Lachgar concluded his interview by calling on Moroccans to go to the polls and be a part of the election process, insisting on not asking to vote for his party but instead, to make the right decision in order to protect the country, giving the example of Algeria, and pointing out that Morocco needs a strong government and parliament in order to face all of the challenges.
