Algeria will review its relations with Morocco after accusing it of being complicit in the deadly forest fires in the country, according to a statement by the presidency.
“The incessant hostile acts carried out by Morocco against Algeria have necessitated the review of relations between the two countries,” the presidency statement said.
There would also be an “intensification of security controls on the western borders” with Morocco, the source adds.
The decision to review relations with Rabat comes during an extraordinary meeting of Algeria’s security council dedicated to evaluating the situation after the fires.
Algeria’s security agency said investigations into the fire had uncovered “a criminal network, classed as a terrorist organization,” pointing fingers at the Movement for Self-determination of Kabylie (MAK).
Last month, Algeria recalled its ambassador in Morocco for consultations after Morocco’s envoy to the UN, Omar Hilale, expressed support for self-determination for Algeria’s Kabylie region.
Relations between Morocco and Algeria have been fraught in the past decades, mainly due to the issue of the disputed Western Sahara.
