The Averroes fault in the Alboran Sea could generate tsunamis with waves that could reach six meters in height and would take between 21 and 35 minutes to reach the north coast of the country.
Researchers from the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) created a public research body in Spain, whereby they analyzed the Averroès marine fault, in the Alboran Sea, and found that its geology can generate a coastal tsunami.
This tsunami may reach the Moroccan coast, in locations such as Ras Tarf cape (wave height 1 m; arrival time 21 min), Punta Negri (wave height 1 m; arrival time 20 min), and the new Nador Harbour (Port Nador West Med) (wave height 1 m; arrival time 27 min), according to the study.
If this is going to happen in the coming days, then it is not going to be the first tsunami in Morocco, since many Moroccan cities have been threatened by tsunami due to urban concentration and climate change, including the tsunami that has happened to Ain Diab coast in Casablanca in 2017 as well as El Hoceima in 2004, and most recently, the earthquake that has hit el Hoceima in 2016.
