Morocco’s gold and jewelry sector remains sluggish, with professionals questioning whether an ongoing competition probe will address suspected market abuses and persistent price gaps, Hespress reported.

Competition Council President Ahmed Rahhou told Hespress AR that the council is conducting a detailed investigation into the sector but declined to provide further details.

A representative of the Moroccan Jewelers Federation told Hespress AR that professionals doubt the investigation will significantly change market conditions, citing the council’s limited powers. However, they are awaiting its findings following a hearing with industry representatives in July 2026.

Price differences between international markets and Morocco persist, the representative said, adding that the sector has yet to recover from a slowdown that continued throughout the year, particularly after the summer holidays.

According to data collected by Hespress on Thursday, the price of 18-karat gold has remained relatively stable in recent weeks, ranging between 1,030 and 1,050 dirhams per gram.

The council launched its review in mid-July amid volatile gold prices and wide price differences. The investigation examines competition in the market, industry regulations, the number of operators and factors affecting daily business.

The federation represents more than 30 professional associations of jewelry makers and goldsmiths across Morocco.
