Sofyan Amrabat said Tuesday he would not play for Morocco while Mohamed Ouahbi remains coach, but stressed that he was not retiring from international football.
Writing on Instagram Stories, the midfielder described the decision as “extremely difficult” and said he no longer felt able to represent the national team under its current leadership.
Out of respect for the squad and everyone involved, Amrabat said he would keep his reasons private. He described representing Morocco as the greatest honor of his career and insisted his attachment to the country and team remained unchanged.
While leaving open the possibility of returning, he wished his teammates and coaching staff success and pledged to support them with the same passion he had shown on the pitch.
The announcement follows a period of irregular playing time for Amrabat, with competition in Morocco’s midfield coming from Nayef El Aynaoui, Ayoub Bouaddi and Azzedine Ounahi in recent matches.
