Morocco issues orange alert for storms and extreme heat across multiple provinces

Morocco’s General Directorate of Meteorology issued an orange-level alert Thursday, Aug. 13, warning of thunderstorms, hail, strong winds, and temperatures reaching 48 °C in several provinces through Saturday.

Thunderstorms bringing 20 to 35 mm of rain, with possible hail and strong gusts, are expected between 1 p.m. and 11 p.m. Thursday in Al Hoceima, Boulemane, Driouch, Rehamna, Figuig, Chichaoua, Jerada, Al Haouz, El Kelaa des Sraghna, Taroudant, Marrakech, Taza, Taourirt and Guercif.

A separate heat alert covers Aousserd, Oued Ed-Dahab, Boujdour, Assa-Zag, Es-Semara and Tata, where temperatures are forecast to range between 45C and 48C from Thursday through Saturday.

Temperatures of 42C to 45C are also expected in inland areas of Laayoune, Tan-Tan and Guelmim through Friday.
