Jordan’s Football Association announced Sunday the appointment of Moroccan coach Badou Zaki as head coach of the national team, succeeding fellow Moroccan Jamal Sellami on a one-year contract ahead of upcoming competitions, including the 2027 AFC Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia.
The decision came after the association’s board, chaired by Prince Ali bin Al Hussein, approved Sellami’s resignation and that of his coaching staff. The federation thanked them for their work with the national team and said Zaki’s assistant coaching staff would be announced at a later date.
Zaki is considered one of the most prominent figures in Moroccan football history. As a goalkeeper, he helped lead Morocco to its historic run at the 1986 World Cup and was named African Footballer of the Year that same year before embarking on a coaching career.
As a manager, Zaki guided Morocco to the final of the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia and has coached several clubs and national teams, including Wydad Casablanca, Kawkab Marrakech, FUS Rabat and Ittihad Tangier, as well as the national teams of Sudan and Niger.
The Moroccan coach had expressed openness in recent days to the prospect of taking charge of Jordan, describing the role as an important opportunity. The agreement was finalized with Sunday’s announcement by the Jordanian federation.
Zaki takes over the “Nashama” as the team prepares for a series of upcoming international fixtures, with the 2027 Asian Cup among its main objectives.
