Moroccan family says typo froze father’s Amsterdam fire compensation for 50 years

A Moroccan family says an administrative typo has blocked access to compensation linked to the death of their father in an Amsterdam hotel fire more than five decades ago.

Ahmed Azroual, from Boumalne Dades in Tinghir province, told Hespress that his father, Mohamed Ben Brahim Azroual, died in December 1970 after a fire at a hotel in the Dutch capital. He says compensation allocated by Dutch authorities and insurers was later transferred to Morocco and remains frozen at the Deposit and Management Fund under an account number cited in official correspondence.

Azroual said he only learned details of the file in 2004 after receiving documents from his uncle, who had handled the case for years. A letter from the Ouarzazate prosecutor’s office that year referred to compensation held at the fund.

The family says the obstacle is a mismatch in the birthplace, listed in old documents as “Boulman” instead of “Boumalne.”

Azroual says he has recently contacted the fund and filed a complaint with Morocco’s Ombudsman, seeking an official response and consular help to obtain the original transfer document from Dutch authorities.
