Morocco’s National Agency for Water and Forests placed 12 provinces under extreme forest fire risk for the week of July 6 to 12, as high summer temperatures and dry vegetation increase pressure on forested areas.
The agency’s updated forest fire risk bulletin classified Berkane, Nador, Taourirt, Guercif, Ifrane, Taounate, Taza, Khénifra, Al Haouz, Essaouira, Agadir-Ida-Ou-Tanane and Taroudannt at the highest risk level.
ANEF said the risk maps are based on scientific prediction models that factor in forest cover, combustibility, flammability and topoclimatic conditions.
A high-risk level was also recorded in several northern, central and eastern provinces, including Chefchaouen, Tetouan, Larache, Oujda-Angad, Fez, Kenitra, Rabat, Salé, Azilal, Beni Mellal and Midelt.
Medium risk was identified in Al Hoceima, Driouch, Meknes, El Hajeb, Boulemane, Sefrou, Sidi Kacem and Khemisset.
ANEF urged residents near forests, visitors and people working in forest areas to remain vigilant, avoid fire-starting behavior and alert local authorities immediately if they notice smoke or suspicious activity.
