Morocco honoured captain Achraf Hakimi in Houston after he became only the second player to make 100 appearances for the national team.

The Paris Saint-Germain defender reached the milestone during Morocco’s round-of-32 victory over the Netherlands, which sent the Atlas Lions into a World Cup last-16 meeting with Canada.

Players, coaching staff and officials from the Royal Moroccan Football Federation attended the ceremony, where federation president Fouzi Lekjaa praised Hakimi’s professionalism, leadership and contribution to the national team.

Hakimi thanked his teammates, coaches and federation officials for supporting him throughout his international career.

The 27-year-old made his senior Morocco debut in 2016 and has since become one of the team’s most influential players, featuring in its historic run to the 2022 World Cup semifinals.

The tribute came before Morocco’s round-of-16 match against co-host Canada on Saturday.
