WhatsApp has begun allowing users to reserve unique usernames before launching a feature later this year that will let people connect without sharing their phone numbers.
The reservation option started rolling out on June 29 and will gradually become available worldwide, WhatsApp said. Users who receive access can choose a handle through Settings, Account and Username.
The company opened reservations early because more than three billion people use the messaging service and many may seek the same names. Creators, businesses and organisations will also be able to claim usernames matching their existing Instagram or Facebook accounts.
Username-based messaging itself is not yet generally available. Reserved handles will become usable when WhatsApp launches the full feature later in 2026.
WhatsApp said there would be no searchable username directory or automated suggestions. People will need to know a user’s exact handle to initiate contact, while an optional security key will provide further control over who can send messages.
