Moroccan police seized more than 14,000 psychotropic prescription pills at Tangier Med Port and arrested a truck driver in connection with an alleged international drug smuggling operation, authorities said Wednesday.
The General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) said officers stationed at the port intercepted 14,245 psychotropic tablets concealed inside a Moroccan-registered international freight truck that had arrived on a ferry from a Spanish port.
The shipment was discovered during a vehicle inspection carried out with the assistance of police dogs trained to detect narcotics.
According to the DGSN, the seized drugs included 11,145 Rivotril tablets and 3,100 Trankimazine tablets, both prescription medications that are commonly diverted for illicit use.
Authorities said the pills had been hidden within the truck’s structure in an apparent attempt to smuggle them into Morocco.
Police arrested the truck’s Moroccan driver, who was placed in custody pending an investigation ordered by the competent public prosecutor’s office.
Investigators are working to identify any local and international links to the suspected trafficking network.
The operation is part of ongoing efforts by Moroccan security services to combat international drug trafficking, the smuggling of psychotropic substances and other forms of cross-border organized crime.
