Morocco produced about 8.8 million ounces of silver in 2025, placing it among the world’s 20 largest producers as demand rises from solar-panel manufacturers and other energy-transition industries.
The ranking was compiled by Visual Capitalist using production estimates from the US Geological Survey. Mexico led global output with 173 million ounces, followed by Peru, China, Chile and Bolivia.
Morocco’s position reflects the growing contribution of metals beyond phosphates to its mining industry. Production has been supported by the expansion of the Zgounder silver mine in the Anti-Atlas, where increased processing capacity has raised output.
Silver is widely used in jewellery and investment products, but industrial applications increasingly drive demand. Its high electrical conductivity makes it important for photovoltaic cells, electronics, medical equipment, electrical infrastructure and some electric-vehicle technologies.
The rise in industrial consumption has contributed to successive years in which global silver demand exceeded newly mined and recycled supply, increasing attention on countries able to expand production.
Morocco remains a relatively small producer compared with the leading mining countries, but Zgounder’s expansion gives it a larger position in a market increasingly linked to renewable-energy manufacturing.
The development also supports Morocco’s effort to diversify an extractive sector historically dominated by phosphate production and attract investment into exploration for other minerals.
