Morocco’s left parties form alliance ahead of September elections

Two of Morocco’s main left wing parties announced on Wednesday the creation of the “Alliance of the Left,” a joint political platform that will contest the parliamentary elections scheduled for Sept. 23 and seek to rebuild a fragmented left ahead of a key national vote.

The alliance brings together the Fédération de la gauche démocratique and the Parti socialiste unifié, which had previously coordinated for years before splitting ahead of the 2021 elections. Party leaders said the new framework is intended to extend beyond the upcoming vote and serve as the basis for a longer term political project.

Speaking at a press conference in Casablanca, FGD Secretary General Abdessalam Laâziz described the initiative as a political alliance rather than a purely electoral arrangement, while PSU Secretary General Jamal El Asri said it was designed to respond to the country’s political, economic and social challenges.

According to the alliance’s political charter, the two parties will campaign on themes including democratic reform, anti corruption measures, social justice, regional equity and support for Morocco’s territorial integrity. The platform also calls for deeper political reforms, environmental sustainability and continued backing for the Palestinian cause.

The alliance revives efforts to unify Morocco’s left after years of divisions that weakened its electoral influence. In 2021, the PSU chose to run separately, ending a broader left wing coalition project and contributing to the fragmentation of the left vote.

To prepare for the election campaign, the two parties established a joint 14 member coordination committee that will oversee candidate selection, campaign logistics and political strategy. They also pledged not to nominate candidates associated with corruption or what they described as administrative party networks.
