Morocco has a steel production capacity of 3.3 million tons per year, ranking fifth among Arab countries in operational steel industry capacity, according to a report by energy platform Attaqa.
The report noted that Morocco’s steel output is entirely based on electric arc furnace technology, reflecting a broader regional reliance on this production method.
Egypt leads the Arab world with an annual steel production capacity of 15.6 million tons, followed by Saudi Arabia with 12 million tons and Algeria with 8.7 million tons. The United Arab Emirates ranks fourth with 5.1 million tons.
Oman and Iraq share sixth place, each with 3.2 million tons, followed by Qatar with 2.9 million tons, Syria with 2.4 million tons, and Libya with 1.7 million tons.
Combined, the top 10 Arab steel-producing countries have a total operational capacity exceeding 59 million tons per year, accounting for approximately 2.7% of global steel production capacity, which stands at 2.216 billion tons annually.
The report highlighted that these countries rely almost entirely on electric arc furnaces, rather than traditional coal-based basic oxygen furnace technology.
Globally, basic oxygen furnaces still dominate steel production, accounting for about 66% of total capacity, while electric arc furnaces represent around 34%, according to the report.
