Morocco is bracing for a period of unstable weather through the remainder of the week as an upper-level low-pressure system, accompanied by cold air masses, moves toward the Kingdom, according to the General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM).
The Ministry of Equipment and Water has issued an orange-level weather alert warning of strong wind gusts and snowfall across several provinces from Thursday through Saturday. High-altitude peaks above 2,000 meters are expected to receive significant snowfall accumulation.
Houcine Youabed, head of communication at the DGM, told Hespress that the weather shift will trigger local thunderstorms starting Thursday in the southeast and southern parts of the Oriental region. Scattered rainfall is also expected over the Atlas Mountains, the northern part of the southern provinces, and nearby western areas.
The ministry said Figuig will experience strong winds ranging from 70 to 85 kph, accompanied by blowing dust, on Thursday from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Strong gusts are also forecast for the Oriental region, the Atlas, the Rif, central coastal areas, and the southern provinces, potentially causing localized dust storms in arid and semi-arid areas.
Heavy snowfall ranging from 10 to 25 centimeters is expected in Ouarzazate, Azilal, Midelt, Tinghir, Taroudant, and Al Haouz provinces. Snowfall is forecast to begin Friday evening.
While high-altitude areas are expected to experience cold temperatures ranging from 7 to 14 degrees Celsius, the far south will remain relatively hot, with temperatures between 30 and 36 degrees Celsius.
Weekend outlook
On Friday, a weak Atlantic disturbance is expected to bring scattered rain to the Atlas, the Rif, and the northern plains, with possible light drizzle in other parts of the northern and central Atlantic plains and the Oriental region.
Snowfall will continue in the High Atlas, alongside strong winds in the Rif, Tangier, the northeastern regions, the Atlas, central coastal areas, and the southern provinces, with localized dust dispersion expected.
On Saturday, showers and thunderstorms are expected again over the Atlas and surrounding areas, as well as the Oriental region, while relatively humid conditions will persist in the Rif and the northern and central Atlantic plains.
Snowfall will continue in the High and Middle Atlas, with moderate to strong winds affecting the central coasts, the southeast, and the southern provinces.
Youabed noted that temperatures will drop in the Oriental region, along the Mediterranean coast, in the southeast, and in the Middle Atlas, while a slight increase is expected in other parts of the Kingdom.
From Sunday through mid-next week, unstable conditions are expected to persist in northern Morocco, with continued chances of localized rainfall and snowfall in the High Atlas, particularly on Monday and Tuesday.
Strong winds are also expected to continue in the southern provinces, central coastal areas, the southeast, the Oriental region, and Tangier, with blowing dust reported in some areas.
Authorities urged citizens to exercise caution, especially when traveling through areas prone to strong winds, reduced visibility due to dust, or heavy thunderstorms.
