Royal Air Maroc plans to increase flights between Casablanca and São Paulo from four to five weekly services by the end of the year as it prepares for a possible return to Rio de Janeiro, the airline’s regional director for Latin America told the Arab-Brazilian News Agency.
Speaking during the WTM Latin America tourism fair in São Paulo, regional director Othman Baba said the Moroccan carrier first needed to consolidate operations on the São Paulo route before expanding elsewhere in Brazil.
“We are working to strengthen São Paulo. Then we can open operations in Rio de Janeiro,” Baba told Arab-Brazilian News Agency, adding that sustainable expansion would require at least five or six weekly flights to São Paulo.
Royal Air Maroc resumed flights to Brazil in 2024 after suspending operations during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The airline currently operates four weekly flights between Casablanca and São Paulo using Boeing 787 aircraft after increasing frequency from three flights late last year.
The airline previously served Rio de Janeiro until the early 1990s.
Baba said the São Paulo route was operating with an average load factor of 80 percent, describing demand as strong and largely driven by leisure travelers, including passengers visiting relatives and friends in Morocco.
He added that business travel remained a smaller but growing segment as trade ties between Morocco and Brazil expand in sectors including agribusiness and energy.
Royal Air Maroc has been expanding its international network this year with new routes including Los Angeles and Saint Petersburg, alongside additional European destinations, according to Baba.
