France has condemned an attack claimed by the Polisario Front on the city of Smara on Monday, May 5, which left one civilian injured, according to an official statement released on May 7.
France described the attack as a threat to regional stability and said it endangers the negotiation process launched following the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2797 (2025). Paris called on the Polisario Front to respect the ceasefire and comply with the resolution, while expressing support for ongoing negotiations to end what it called a conflict that has lasted too long.

France reaffirmed that Morocco’s autonomy initiative under Moroccan sovereignty represents the only basis for achieving a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable peace, and called on all parties to engage with it.
France also called on MINURSO, in coordination with Moroccan authorities, to shed full light on the attacks, and commended the mission’s work in the current difficult context.
