Morocco’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Omar Hilale, met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres at the organization’s headquarters in New York to discuss ways to strengthen the global peacebuilding agenda and enhance the work of the Peacebuilding Commission.
Hilale, who currently chairs the UN Peacebuilding Commission, reviewed the body’s recent achievements, including support for national strategies aimed at conflict prevention and efforts to improve coordination with international financial institutions.
The discussions also focused on mobilizing sustainable financing for initiatives designed to promote stability and development in fragile regions, according to a statement shared by Morocco’s permanent mission to the UN on the social media platform X.
Hilale emphasized that peacebuilding should not be viewed as a peripheral activity within the United Nations, but rather as central to its mission. He said the commission is working to shift from a framework based on recommendations to one focused on delivering tangible results on the ground.
During the meeting, Hilale extended an official invitation to Guterres to attend the first edition of Peacebuilding Week and its annual session, scheduled for June 22, 2026, under the theme “Partnerships for Peacebuilding.”
The event aims to broaden international engagement and strengthen collaboration among stakeholders involved in peacebuilding efforts.
Hilale also highlighted the current global context, marked by increasing challenges to multilateralism, saying it reinforces the commission’s role as a key partner to the UN secretary-general and a platform supporting efforts in conflict prevention, crisis resolution and the promotion of international stability.
