Two U.S. service members participating in the African Lion 2026 military exercise were reported missing Saturday night near the Cap Draa Training Area, close to the city of Tan-Tan in southern Morocco, according to a FAR statement published on Facebook.
The two soldiers were reported missing around 9 p.m. on May 2 near a cliffside area at Cap Draa, prompting an immediate large-scale search and rescue operation involving Moroccan, American and other participating forces.
Authorities said coordinated rescue efforts were launched using ground, air and maritime assets as part of the multinational response under the African Lion exercise framework.
In a statement, AFRICOM said the priority remains focused on locating the missing personnel and supporting their families.
“The incident remains under investigation and the search is ongoing,” the statement said, adding that further information will be released as developments emerge.
No further details have been released regarding the identities of the missing personnel or the circumstances surrounding the disappearance.
