A deadly gas explosion inside a residential home in Batna province killed two people and injured two others on Monday, as Algeria hosts high-level diplomatic talks with the United States and heightened security concerns following reported twin security incidents near the capital.
The explosion occurred in the Tazoult Road area of Batna district, where a gas leak inside a family home triggered a powerful blast that caused significant material damage and panic among nearby residents, according to preliminary local reports from Ennahar news outlet.
Authorities quoted by the Algerian media say two people were killed and two others sustained injuries of varying severity. Emergency teams from Algeria’s Civil Protection services rushed to the scene shortly after the blast, launching rescue operations, evacuating the injured to a nearby hospital and securing the area.

The two-story building suffered extensive structural damage, while officials said investigations are still underway to determine the exact cause of the explosion.
The incident unfolded as Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf received U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau on the second day of the American official’s visit to Algeria. Their talks focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation, including trade opportunities, as well as joint efforts to support regional stability, security and economic prosperity.
The timing coincided with heightened national attention over reported twin security incidents in Blida, southwest of Algiers, where two suspected suicide bombers were reportedly killed on April 13. Algerian authorities have not officially confirmed the incidents.
The reported attacks came during the historic visit of Pope Leo XIV, the first pope ever to visit Algeria, under tight security arrangements.
While no link has been established between the Batna gas explosion and the broader security developments in the country, the series of incidents placed Algeria under intense domestic and international scrutiny on Monday.
Authorities continue to investigate the Batna explosion as residents await further details on what caused the fatal blast.
