A 25-year-old woman of Moroccan origin was killed in Montreal after being shot inside her apartment in downtown, in a case that has reignited concerns over domestic violence in Quebec, according to local media and police sources.
The Montreal Police Service (SPVM) said the events began unfolding on Wednesday afternoon, when the suspect, identified as her partner, 27-year-old Alexandre Karim Amouri Resto, alerted authorities at Montreal-Trudeau International Airport that his partner was injured inside their residence on Simpson Street.
When emergency teams arrived at the scene, they found the woman lying in a pool of blood with a fatal gunshot wound to the upper part of her body. Despite resuscitation efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene due to severe blood loss.
Media reports from the scene said the suspect was arrested at the airport while allegedly preparing to leave the country. He was later brought before a Montreal court via video conference on Thursday, where he was charged by the Director of Criminal and Penal Prosecutions (DPCP) with manslaughter involving a firearm. He has been remanded in custody pending his next hearing scheduled for later this month.
