Morocco plans summer pause in soft wheat imports as harvest outlook improves
Monday 13 April 2026 - 09:09

Morocco is preparing to suspend soft wheat imports in June and July as the outlook for this season’s grain harvest improves, according to an industry souce who spoke to Hespress, in a move aimed at giving the local crop room to reach the market without being undercut by incoming shipments.

The reported pause would apply to soft tendre, the variety used most widely in bread production and the most sensitive part of Morocco’s grain market, as the government seeks to protect the harvest during its peak collection period, while creating better conditions for storage and marketing before imports resume with the next campaign.

The timing reflects a much better cereal outlook than Morocco has seen in recent years. Bank Al Maghrib said in March that the harvest of the country’s three main cereals could reach 82 million quintals this season, based on a planted area of 3.9 million hectares. It said that rebound could push agricultural value added up by 14.4 percent in 2026.

Grain output has swung heavily with rainfall since 2022, forcing Morocco to lean more heavily on imports to secure supply.

Since the war in Ukraine disrupted world grain markets, Morocco has increased purchases from abroad, including from Russia, France and the United States, while the state used import support measures to help secure stocks and contain pressure on domestic prices.
Morocco is still receiving grain shipments, with some vessels waiting to unload at its ports.
