The United Nations Mine Action Service has commended an event held at the headquarters of MINURSO in Laayoune to mark the International Day for Mine Awareness, highlighting its role in promoting humanitarian safety and regional stability.
In a statement, UNMAS emphasized the importance of investing in mine action as a key tool for protecting lives and creating conditions for lasting peace. It described demining efforts as central to broader international initiatives supporting humanitarian security.
The agency also praised the work of U.N. demining teams and military observers, who continue to carry out field operations aimed at reducing the risks posed by unexploded ordnance and securing affected areas.
MINURSO has previously warned that landmines remain a serious threat to civilians in several areas across the territory, despite ongoing efforts to mitigate their humanitarian impact.
The event in Laayoune was held under the theme “Investing in Peace… Investing in Mine Action” and brought together U.N. officials and field partners.
During the ceremony, Alexander Ivanko, the U.N. secretary-general’s special representative and head of the mission, delivered a message on behalf of António Guterres.
In the message, Guterres called on member states to strengthen their commitments to international agreements, particularly the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention, and urged countries that have withdrawn to rejoin.
He stressed that mine clearance remains essential to protecting civilians and advancing international peace and security efforts in conflict-affected areas.
