Ministry source: Onion prices to stabilize as harvest progresses

A Moroccan Agriculture Ministry official said the recent rise in onion prices is mainly due to the end of the dry onion season, with markets currently relying on remaining summer stock.

The official tells Hespress AR that  green onions remain widely available across national markets at relatively affordable prices, which is expected to help ease pressure in the coming weeks.

As summer stock of dry onions gradually declines, supply tightens, pushing prices higher, the source said, noting that such increases are typical for this time of year.

Green onions currently dominate market supply, with prices ranging between 6 and 7 dirhams per kilogram, making them a more affordable alternative to dry onions at this stage.

Prices are expected to decline progressively in the coming weeks as harvesting and distribution advance, improving supply and stabilizing the market, the official added.

The ministry also sought to reassure consumers, saying winter onion cultivation is proceeding as planned. The area planted with green onions nationwide has reached about 13,000 hectares, with expected production estimated at around 355,000 tons.

Recent criticism has focused primarily on dry onion prices, which, depending on the region, currently range between 12 and 14 dirhams per kilogram.
