Moroccan singer Saad Lamjarred is set to return to the spotlight in France as new public hearings reopen the appeal stage of a rape case that has drawn sustained media attention since 2016.
According to Hespress, Lamjarred’s defence team says it has assembled new evidence that could affect the case, while French authorities are also expected to examine separate allegations linked to an attempted blackmail scheme targeting the singer.
Defence lawyers say recent investigations pointed to an alleged demand for a large sum of money in exchange for withdrawing accusations made in earlier stages of the case. They argue that these elements could weigh on the court’s assessment of the broader file.
The case stems from a complaint filed in 2016 by French woman Laura Prioul. In 2023, a French court sentenced Lamjarred to six years in prison for rape. He appealed the ruling immediately and has continued to deny the accusations.
