Morocco’s King Mohammed VI performed the Eid al Fitr prayer on Friday at the Ahl Fes mosque in the Mechouar district of Rabat, accompanied by Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan, Prince Moulay Rachid, Prince Moulay Ahmed and Prince Moulay Ismail, the official MAP news agency reported.

The king travelled from the Royal Palace in Rabat to the mosque in a ceremonial procession as crowds gathered along the route to offer Eid greetings at the end of the fasting month of Ramadan, MAP said.

On arrival, he reviewed a detachment of the Royal Guard that rendered honours.

After the prayer, the imam delivered a sermon centred on the spiritual significance of Ramadan, describing the holy month as a period of piety, devotion and divine blessing. He said the faithful had spent Ramadan in an atmosphere of worship and purification and recalled that the month had also been marked by the commemoration of Laylat al Qadr under the chairmanship of the king in his capacity as Amir Al Mouminine, or Commander of the Faithful.

The imam said Eid was a moment of joy and gratitude in which believers thanked God for the blessings of the month and prayed for acceptance of their fasting, prayers and good deeds. He concluded with prayers for the preservation of the king, the success of his actions and blessings for the royal family, while also invoking the memory of the late kings Mohammed V and Hassan II, according to MAP.

Following the ceremony, ambassadors from Islamic countries accredited to Morocco greeted the king and offered their congratulations, MAP reported. The king then returned to the Royal Palace, where he received Eid greetings from Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan, Prince Moulay Rachid, the head of government, the speakers of both houses of parliament, senior judicial officials, presidents of constitutional institutions and a number of civilian and military figures.

The ceremony took place after Morocco officially announced on Thursday evening that Eid al Fitr would fall on Friday, March 20, after the Shawwal crescent was sighted in the kingdom
