Former FC Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez said he received an offer to manage the Morocco national football team, before Moroccan football authorities ultimately appointed Mohamed Ouahbi to lead the side.
In remarks to Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia, Xavi said he had received several coaching proposals, including one from Morocco.
“I received several offers, one from Morocco and others from different countries,” he said, according to Spanish media reports.
The former Barcelona midfielder also expressed interest in coaching a national team, noting that the schedule may better suit family life compared with managing a club.
“It’s true that coaching a club can make it difficult to balance with family life, so I would also like to test myself with a national team,” he said.
Xavi added that he would welcome the opportunity to coach in major international tournaments, including the FIFA World Cup, the UEFA European Championship, or even the Africa Cup of Nations.
The Royal Moroccan Football Federation announced Thursday that Ouahbi would take charge of the national team, ending speculation over the successor to former coach Walid Regragui.
