Morocco’s football federation appointed Mohamed Ouahbi as head coach of the national team on Thursday, replacing Walid Regragui in a move aimed at launching a new phase for the Atlas Lions ahead of upcoming continental and international competitions.

The Royal Moroccan Football Federation announced the decision during a press conference at the Mohammed VI Football Complex near Rabat.

Ouahbi, who previously worked with Morocco’s youth national teams, has built a reputation for his work developing young players and structuring competitive squads within the federation’s academy system.

Regragui leaves after overseeing one of the most successful periods in Moroccan football history. Under his leadership, Morocco reached the semifinals of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, becoming the first African and Arab team to achieve that milestone.

The national team also reached the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and climbed to eighth place in FIFA’s world rankings, its highest position to date.

Speaking during a ceremony marking the transition, Regragui said his connection with the national team had spanned decades, beginning as a supporter and later as a player before returning as a coach.

“When I took charge before the 2022 World Cup, I knew the team had talented players but needed a clear framework and identity,” he said.

Regragui said his goal had been to build a winning culture and strengthen cohesion within the squad, adding that he had given his “full commitment” to the national team.

He also credited Morocco’s football development to the strategic vision of King Mohammed VI, highlighting investments in infrastructure and governance reforms within the sport.

Ouahbi now faces the challenge of maintaining Morocco’s status among Africa’s leading teams while preparing the next generation of players for international competition.
