A group of 40 countries supporting Morocco’s territorial integrity said in Geneva on Monday it backs implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2797 to revive the political process through negotiations involving the four parties referenced in the text, based on Morocco’s autonomy plan, according to a statement read during the 61st session of the UN Human Rights Council.
The statement, delivered under item 2 and read by Morocco’s permanent representative in Geneva, Ambassador Omar Zniber, welcomed Morocco’s stated intention to update and further detail its autonomy proposal and its commitment to facilitate the return and integration of residents of the Tindouf camps “on the basis of equality among all Moroccan citizens,” the group said.
It also said engagement between member states, the council and the high commissioner should remain bilateral and protected from “any exploitation,” while praising Morocco’s cooperation with the UN human rights system, including OHCHR and special procedures.
The group cited the opening of consulates in Dakhla and Laayoune as a driver of investment and regional development.
