Several regions of Morocco have recorded an unusual rise in temperatures in recent days despite peak winter conditions, following weeks of heavy rain and snowfall.
Houcine Youabed, communications official at the General Directorate of Meteorology, told SNRTnews temperatures have climbed about 3 to 8 degrees Celsius above seasonal averages.
He attributed the warm spell mainly to a subtropical anticyclone expanding toward North Africa, bringing stable conditions and warmer, relatively dry air masses from the south under southerly to southwesterly flows.
Youabed said clear skies and limited cloud cover have also boosted daytime solar heating, lifting temperatures above normal in inland and southern areas and on the southern slopes of the Atlas, while the effect has been weaker along the Atlantic coast.
He said conditions should evolve gradually this week. The persistent high pressure system is expected to keep weather relatively stable in the short term, with mild to warm days and cooler nights.
From Wednesday and Thursday, he said the anticyclone should retreat southward, allowing an upper level depression and colder air aloft to move in. That shift is forecast to increase unstable mid and high cloud cover, especially over the Atlas and the northwest of the southern provinces, with a risk of localized thunderstorms.
Youabed also warned of stronger winds in central and southern areas, with possible dust and sand reducing visibility. Temperatures are expected to decline gradually, particularly in the north and mountainous areas, with unsettled conditions possibly continuing into the weekend. Early next week, precipitation could expand into northern Morocco, with snow possible on higher ground.
