Moroccan local authorities on Monday began implementing the second phase of a program to return residents who were temporarily evacuated due to exceptional weather conditions in Sidi Kacem Province, after improved weather and receding floodwaters allowed access to affected areas.
Families included in this phase began leaving a temporary shelter in the city of Sidi Kacem early Monday, heading back to their home communities and rural villages identified by local authorities.
Several beneficiaries expressed gratitude to King Mohammed VI, praising the care and support provided during their stay at the temporary shelter, including transportation, accommodation and medical services while awaiting safer conditions to return home.
Mohammed El Hamdani, a resident of the village of Dargaoua Al Aroussiyine in the Houwafate commune, said he and his family were protected from the floods and harsh weather while housed at the shelter and welcomed the opportunity to return after water levels subsided.
Another evacuee, Larbi Zahar, said his family’s basic needs were met throughout their displacement and noted that his wife received medical care that allowed her to safely give birth to their daughter during their stay at the shelter.
Earlier Monday, provincial authorities said the second phase of the return program covers residents from several communes, including Khnichat, Touguilt, Anouirat, Houwafate, Tekna, Bir Taleb, Sidi El Kamel, Armelat, Sidi Azzouz and Sfafsa, following assessments of road access and infrastructure safety.
Authorities said additional areas and timelines for subsequent phases will be announced in further statements, depending on field conditions and the readiness of infrastructure.
