Morocco is set for a turbulent weekend as heavy rain, snow, and strong winds affect much of the country, before a gradual stabilization of weather conditions is expected starting Sunday, Feb. 15, according to the National Meteorology Directorate.

The weather service forecasts that atmospheric disturbances will persist on Friday and Saturday, with rainfall and snow concentrated across the northern Atlantic plains, the Mediterranean coast, the eastern region, the Rif mountains, and the Middle and High Atlas ranges.

Snowfall is expected to be particularly significant over mountain peaks, with snow levels dropping to 1,200 meters by Saturday in the Atlas, Rif, and eastern regions.

The meteorological agency also warned of strong winds across most of Morocco, which could cause localized sandstorms in eastern and southern areas.

Speaking to Hespress AR, Houssin Youabed, the communication officer at the meteorology directorate, said the fluctuations are due to “an active system over the Atlantic Ocean that continues to affect the country.”

“You can expect broad improvements starting Sunday, as the Azores High shifts toward Morocco. This will halt precipitation and gradually stabilize the weather, with daytime temperatures rising,” he added.

Looking ahead to next week, weather data indicates a period of relative stability from Monday through Thursday, with gradually increasing daytime temperatures. Most regions will temporarily escape the extreme cold experienced in recent days, which saw temperatures drop to as low as -9°C in the Atlas mountains.

Youabed noted that while long stretches of sunny weather are unlikely during winter, Sunday will feature generally stable conditions with partly cloudy skies over northern Atlantic plains, the Saïs region, and the eastern territories.

He also warned that strong to occasionally severe winds will continue over the Mediterranean coast, eastern regions, and southern provinces, sometimes accompanied by blowing sand.

Saturday is expected to bring scattered rain and occasional thunderstorms over the Rif, Saïs, and the Middle and High Atlas, as well as the surrounding western plains and northern parts of the eastern region. Snowfall will affect the High and Middle Atlas, Rif, and eastern highlands starting from 1,200 meters.

Strong winds are predicted in northern and northwestern areas including Tangier, the Rif, the Atlas, Saïs, the phosphate and Moulouya plateaus, Atlantic plains, Mediterranean coast, eastern regions, southeast, and southern provinces.
