Heavy rainfall has damaged at least 163 roads across Morocco’s Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region, according to official data from the regional directorate of equipment and transport.
The damage affected classified roads across the region’s five provinces, including national, regional and provincial routes. Authorities are working to repair the affected sections and reopen them to traffic, officials said.
Eight roads remain completely closed, including two national roads, two regional roads and four provincial roads, due to severe erosion and landslides caused by the recent downpours.
In Tangier province, 20 erosion points were recorded. National Road No. 16 was fully cut off, while other damaged roads have since been reopened. Tetouan province reported 15 erosion points, with traffic suspended on Provincial Road 4702 linking Tetouan and Larache.
In Larache province, Provincial Roads 4706 and 4405 and National Road No. 1 were closed, while 17 other roads sustained minor damage. In Chefchaouen, Regional Road 410 was shut down due to safety concerns, and 49 other roads were affected.
Al Hoceima province recorded 33 cases of road erosion, though none led to full closures following field interventions by authorities.
Officials said unclassified roads managed by the Interior Ministry, the agriculture sector and local councils also suffered significant damage, but no official figures are available yet. A full assessment will be conducted once floodwaters recede and weather conditions improve.
