Heavy overnight rainfall across northern Morocco has pushed the Al Wahda (Oued El Makhazine) dam above capacity, with reservoir levels reaching 160% as of Sunday morning, according to officials cited by Hespress.
The dam now holds an estimated 1.08 billion cubic meters of water after receiving about 70 million cubic meters in the past 24 hours, including 11.7 million cubic meters early Sunday.
Authorities say discharge operations are continuing, with around 635 cubic meters per second released into the Loukkos River, contributing to ongoing flooding in parts of Ksar el Kebir.
Officials stressed that the situation at the dam remains under control, noting that safety inspections conducted Sunday confirmed the structural integrity of the facility.
Preparations are underway to absorb additional inflows as weather alerts forecast up to 90 millimeters of further rainfall, particularly from tributaries in Chefchaouen and Ouazzane provinces.
Flood levels in Ksar el Kebir are expected to rise further due to sustained dam releases and high tides at the Loukkos River estuary near Larache, which are slowing water runoff. Local authorities continue to strictly enforce a full evacuation of the city, sealing access roads and detaining individuals attempting to enter flood-hit areas.
