Morocco has been ranked 99th out of 171 countries in the 2026 Global Social Progress Index, according to the latest report released by the U.S.-based Social Progress Imperative. The kingdom earned a score of 63.19 points, marking a slight improvement compared to last year’s ranking.
Norway topped the global list with a score of 91.73, followed by Denmark, Finland, Sweden and Iceland. At the bottom of the ranking, Tanzania, the Solomon Islands and Bangladesh occupied the last three places respectively.
Among Arab League member states, the United Arab Emirates led the regional rankings, placing 44th globally with 74.68 points. Qatar followed in 48th place, ahead of Kuwait, Oman and Saudi Arabia. Somalia ranked last among Arab states, positioned 161st globally with a score of 41.18.
The Global Social Progress Index evaluates countries using 57 social and environmental indicators across 171 nations, covering more than 99% of the world’s population. The report highlighted that social progress declined in 50 countries over the past year, while only 36 countries recorded improvements, and 85 countries remained at the same level as the previous year.
The report attributed the decline in some regions mainly to a deterioration of rights, which have dropped by about six points since 2011. Other factors contributing to the decline between 2021 and 2025 included worsening outcomes in health, safety, environmental conditions, water and sanitation services, housing, and access to information.
The document also warned that the global trend toward authoritarian and populist leadership has first weakened rights and is now affecting other areas of social progress. It noted that ongoing rights erosion in many countries could accelerate the global decline in social progress in the coming years.
The report highlighted the United States as a notable example, stating that it has fallen 14 places in the index since 2011 and has seen declines across all social progress dimensions, including rights, housing, education, inclusion and safety, with drops exceeding three points.
The Global Social Progress Index is structured around three main dimensions: basic human needs, which measures a country’s ability to ensure survival and meet essential needs; foundations of wellbeing, which evaluates access to education and a healthy environment; and opportunity, which assesses the degree of freedom citizens have in making life choices.
