A recent report by Modern Diplomacy said that Moroccan diplomacy enters a crucial transition in 2026, moving beyond dependence toward “relative independent decision-making.”
The goal is to strengthen Morocco’s role as a balanced, strategic player while protecting its core values, national unity, and diplomatic sovereignty.
The report, titled “Moroccan diplomacy: The Post-unipolar era of global change,” said that by 2026, the world faces political, economic, and security uncertainties as the unipolar order declines and multipolarity rises.
Morocco has strengthened its regional role with a meaningful impact through political stability, institutional legitimacy, and growing influence across Africa, especially in security, migration, and counter-terrorism.
It highlighted that Moroccan diplomacy now needs to move from managing relations to actively shaping them pragmatically and realistically.
It explained that Moroccan diplomacy will maintain continuity in its previous strategies while seeking to update its tools and priorities to enhance sovereignty, keeping traditional ties with the EU and the US, but also strengthening relations with China, Russia, the Gulf, and Africa.
This approach, the same source added, reflects diplomatic diligence designed to manage interests realistically and pragmatically in a world that no longer accepts strict stability in alignments.
The report also highlighted that economic diplomacy will be a key tool for Morocco to strengthen its international presence through major projects in energy, green industries, and infrastructure, especially in West Africa, the Sahel, and the Atlantic regions, while using the Sahara issue to reinforce recognition of its sovereignty.
Moroccan diplomacy must remain calculated and balanced in the face of a fragile international economy, sensitive regional relations, and rising competition in Africa, “protecting national interests first without engaging in uncertain geopolitical adventures,” according to the same source.
It said that Moroccan diplomacy balances moderate dialogue with a strong commitment to protecting the country’s core principles, especially sovereignty, promoting regional stability while refusing a subordinate position.
The report concluded that through restraint and active engagement, “Morocco seeks to create meaningful relationships and establish itself as a responsible, influential player in the area.”
