Morocco advanced to the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 final after defeating Nigeria 4–2 on penalties following a 0–0 draw after extra time in their semifinal on Wednesday at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.

Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou played a decisive role in the shootout, saving Nigeria’s opening attempt, while captain Achraf Hakimi converted the winning penalty to seal Morocco’s place in Sunday’s final against Senegal national football team.

Morocco dominated much of the match in regulation time, pressing high and controlling possession. Brahim Díaz and Hakimi were central to the hosts’ attacking play, with several chances created down the right flank. Early opportunities fell to Ismaël Saibari and Díaz, but Nigeria goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali kept his side level.

Nigeria struggled to create clear chances, relying mainly on long balls toward Victor Osimhen, who was largely isolated. Their best opening came in the first half through Ademola Lookman, whose effort was saved by Bounou.

The pattern continued after the break, with Morocco applying sustained pressure. Noussair Mazraoui and Abde Ezzalzouli both came close, while a Hakimi shot in the second half was blocked inside the penalty area, prompting appeals for a handball that were waved away.

Extra time produced few clear chances, though substitute Hamza Igamane tested the Nigerian defence with two attempts, including a curled shot that went wide. Nigeria remained compact and cautious, appearing content to take the match to penalties.

In the shootout, El Aynaoui and Eliesse Ben Seghir converted for Morocco, while Nigeria missed two of their first four attempts. Hakimi then stepped up to score the decisive penalty, sparking celebrations among the home crowd.

The win sends Morocco into their first AFCON final since 2004, where they will face Senegal as they seek a first continental title on home soil.
