Morocco’s Association of Bar Associations has announced a nationwide suspension of legal services starting Tuesday, January 6, warning that proposed reforms threaten the independence of the legal profession and undermine years of institutional dialogue with the Justice Ministry.
The decision followed an extraordinary meeting of the association’s governing bodies, held in Marrakesh, where members voiced strong concern over what they described as the ministry’s abandonment of a participatory approach to reform. Lawyers accused the ministry of ignoring feedback submitted during previous consultations, including those held under parliamentary mediation.
In a statement, the association rejected the final version of the draft law regulating the legal profession, arguing that it weakens core principles of professional independence and the right to defense. It called for the bill to be withdrawn and redrafted in consultation with the association, which it says is the profession’s sole legitimate representative.
The group warned that lawyers would not recognize legislation that fails to safeguard fair trial standards and the autonomy of the bar, holding the Justice Ministry fully responsible for the escalating dispute.
