The United Nations General Assembly has approved a regular budget of $3.45 billion for 2026, aiming to fund the organization’s core missions while tightening overall spending.
All 193 member states voted in favor of the budget on December 30, 2025, following lengthy negotiations within the Fifth Committee, which oversees administrative and budgetary matters. The budget will finance the UN’s three main pillars: peace and security, sustainable development, and human rights, as well as central activities such as political affairs, international law, humanitarian action, and public information.
The approved amount is about $200 million higher than the Secretary General’s initial proposal under the UN80 reform framework, but still roughly 7 percent lower than the 2025 budget, reflecting efforts to curb costs.
UN Controller Chandramouli Ramanathan welcomed the consensus vote, noting that the Secretariat prepared the full budget in less than six weeks under tight deadlines.
