Morocco’s ports of Tangier Med and Tangier City recorded a sharp increase in arrivals by Moroccans living abroad over the weekend, driven by year-end holidays and the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals hosted by the kingdom, according to informed Hespress AR, sources.
Tangier Med port received 15,274 passengers, 4,310 vehicles and 10 buses on Sunday alone, marking a significant rise in traffic by Moroccans returning home.
On Saturday, the port registered the arrival of about 10,200 passengers and nearly 3,000 vehicles. Sources said the figures have been climbing steadily over the past few days, noting that the same period last year saw only around 1,600 vehicles.
Sources did not rule out a direct impact from AFCON 2025 on this year’s influx, pointing to early arrivals by Moroccans eager to avoid congestion and attend the tournament’s opening match between Morocco and Comoros, which the host nation won 2-0.
A similar trend was observed at Tangier City port. About 4,600 passengers entered the country through the port on Saturday, representing a 92% increase compared with the same day last year, sources said.
On Sunday, arrivals through Tangier City reached around 3,500 passengers, up 14% from a year earlier.
The figures reinforce expectations of a broader rise in the number of returning Moroccans and tourists during the year-end holiday period, boosted by Morocco’s hosting of the AFCON finals, an event the country sees as both an organizational showcase and a long-awaited sporting opportunity.
