Iran on Saturday executed a man convicted of spying for Israel’s intelligence services, according to Iranian state media.
State television identified the man as Aqil Keshavarz and said he had engaged in what it described as “close intelligence cooperation” with Israel’s Mossad and the Israeli military. The report said Keshavarz photographed Iranian military and security sites and transmitted the information to Israeli intelligence.
Keshavarz was arrested in May while allegedly taking photographs of a military facility in the northwestern city of Urmia, about 600 kilometers (371 miles) northwest of Tehran, state media said. Authorities accused him of carrying out more than 200 similar missions for Mossad in cities across Iran, including the capital.
State media said Iran’s Supreme Court upheld his death sentence.
According to the reports, Keshavarz was 27 years old and was studying architecture at the time of his arrest.
Iran has executed 11 people convicted of espionage since an Israeli air campaign against the country in June, state media said. The 12-day conflict reportedly killed about 1,100 people in Iran, including senior military officials and nuclear scientists. Iranian missile attacks in response killed 28 people in Israel, according to Israeli authorities.
