Chinese car manufacturers are rapidly expanding their presence in Morocco, increasing pressure on long-dominant European brands as the country’s automotive market shifts toward the end of 2025, according to a report by the energy and industry platform Attaqa.
The report said Chinese automakers are no longer marginal players in Morocco, citing strong growth driven by competitive pricing, a broader range of models and rising demand for electric and hybrid vehicles.
While European brands continue to dominate overall sales volumes, Chinese manufacturers are among the fastest-growing participants in the market, the report said.
BYD, currently the most established Chinese brand in Morocco, recorded a year-on-year sales increase of more than 3,600% in June 2025, according to cited data. Other Chinese automakers gaining ground include Chery, Geely, Changan and Haval, alongside newer entrants such as Omoda and Jaecoo.
Industry estimates cited in the report suggest Chinese brands accounted for roughly 25% to 30% of new vehicle registrations in Morocco in 2025, a share described as negligible just a few years earlier.
The report said the rise of Chinese manufacturers is not solely price-driven, pointing instead to their strong positioning in electric and hybrid vehicles. While European brands such as Dacia and Renault remain market leaders overall, Chinese automakers are increasingly dominant in the electric vehicle segment, benefiting from government policies that promote green mobility.
The trend also aligns with Morocco’s broader industrial strategy. As the country produces more than 700,000 vehicles annually, it is actively seeking foreign investment, including from Chinese companies, particularly in battery manufacturing and electric vehicle supply chains, the report concluded.
