At least 16 people were killed in what Australian authorities described as an antisemitic attack on Sunday, Dec. 14. In the hours afterward, ABC News Australia interviewed stunned beachgoers, including a young French man who said he had arrived in Australia just two days earlier and was visiting Bondi for the first time.
He told the broadcaster he had been swimming when the shooting began. “I got out of water and boom bom boom,” he said, replaying the moment as he saw two attackers firing into the crowd.
The tourist said one of the gunmen pointed a weapon at him. “The man in the gun aimed to me and I cached,” he added, explaining that he hid.
Despite the chaos, he said he helped a pregnant woman who had fallen, lifting her up and buying her a bottle of water.
The clip spread rapidly online, shared for its rawness and its final line, delivered with quiet devastation: “My cœur is dead today.”
