Khaled Mashal, the head of Hamas’s diaspora office, on Saturday called for the creation of a global alliance in support of Palestine and its independence, saying such a coalition should generate broad international pressure on Israel similar to the movement that preceded the end of apartheid in South Africa.
The comments, reported by the Palestinian Information Center, came during Mashal’s address at the “Oath to Jerusalem: Renewing the Nation’s Resolve Against Liquidation and Genocide” conference, which opened in Istanbul.
Mashal said “the time has come for the nation to liberate Jerusalem as the gateway to liberating Palestine, cleansing Al-Aqsa and restoring the holy sites,” adding that “the oath to Jerusalem is to free it.”
He urged the mobilization of all efforts for Gaza, including securing a halt to the war, providing relief, shelter and reconstruction, reopening border crossings and rejecting any attempts at displacement or Israeli-led restructuring of the enclave.
Mashal also stressed opposition to “all forms of guardianship or mandate over Gaza, the West Bank or any part of Palestine,” saying: “All attempts to frame our cause in misleading forms are rejected. We decide. We are a people that does not break.”
